Aboutthe Collins Center

A Note From the Collins Center

Did you know...?

  • …there is no complete set of guidelines for maintaining a man's health, yet guidelines have been established for maintaining both women's and children's health?
  • …there is no office of men's health at the federal government level in the U.S. There are only two states that have an office of men's health. (There is, however, a federal Office of Women's Health, and 17 states have an office of women's health)?
  • …the amount dedicated annually to research spending on women's health is $3.8 billion, while the amount dedicated toward similar research for men's health is zero?
  • …healthy families and healthy communities will be possible only when men's health, women's health, and children's health all receive adequate attention?

The International Society of Men's Health (ISMH) is the only international organization dedicated to the rapidly growing field of men's health. The comprehensive scope of men's health brings together multiple disciplines such as urology, cardiology, endocrinology, oncology, gerontology, psychiatry, psychology, sexual and reproductive medicine, public health and others.

For several years, the Collins Center has administered a men's health program focused on the health needs of poor men in the U.S. and around the world. Of particular note has been the work on men's health on an international scale with the ISMH. The Collins Center has also been active in advancing men's health issues in Florida, particularly in the inner city Miami community known as Overtown.

Maintaining a close association with ISMH's purpose and objectives has provided a win-win to both organizations. The Collins Center has participated as a contributor and presenter to many of the society's international conferences and has also facilitated the collaborative efforts of its members.

At the center of the Overtown Men's Health Project is a detailed study, the Overtown Men's Health Study. The study utilized a survey instrument designed for the historic African American neighborhood just north of downtown Miami, Florida USA. The extensive questionnaire, administered during the spring of 2005 to men in Overtown ages 18 years and older, assessed health status, behaviors, knowledge, and access to care. The questionnaire also captured sociodemographic data to render a richer picture of men's social and economic experiences in Overtown, asking about such matters as incarceration, homelessness, police-involvement, education, and employment.

Our Men's Health program is an important public policy section of our Web site and offers an examination of the complex issues along with means to engage in an interactive way to learn more about challenges and solutions credited with advancing men's health and public policy issues affecting it.
