SARASOTA COUNTY -- Former
Sarasota Mayor and City Commissioner David Merrill is supporting
Florida Hometown Democracy, a measure on the statewide ballot this
November also known as Constitutional Amendment 4.
"I
want to be clear that I see Amendment 4 as a way to force more
collaboration between developers, government and neighborhoods, not as
an anti-growth measure," Merrill, a contractor and current president of
the Osprey Civic League, said in a statement distributed by the
Hometown Democracy organization.
Amendment
4 would require a referendum on changes to local comprehensive plans.
Its proponents say it will empower residents to decide how and where
their communities should grow.Currently,
elected county or municipal officials can revise their local plans if
they get the consent of the Florida Department of Community Affairs.Opponents of Amendment 4 claim it will overwhelm voters, politicize all land use decisions and stall economic recovery.
