Remembering Admiral Collins

Posted By Steve Seibert, Friday, July 30, 2010

July 30, 2010

I've promised the young people in my office to get serious about blogging...so here comes a renewed effort.

Let me add my voice to the thousands of others who mourn the loss of Admiral LeRoy Collins.  What a decent, intelligent, ethical and caring gentleman.  He defined elegance and we will miss him.

Welcome to the Collins Center social network

Welcome to the Collins Center’s website.  I am Steve Seibert, the Director of Policy for the Center.

The Collins Center is an unusual "think tank.”  We have the typical, first-rate academic and research skills but we are also committed to doing something; a "think tank with muddy boots,” as we were once described, and I think you will see that from a review of our various programs.

As stated on our home page, the Collins Center "is dedicated to advancing the important social and economic public policy issues facing Florida and beyond, and finds meaningful solutions to these challenges.”  We will only succeed if more Floridians become involved…through information sharing, testing ideas and building knowledge.  That is the purpose of this website, and of this blog.

Please note some of our recent programs:

-facilitating conversations amongst the different stakeholders around Lake Okeechobee, in light of the region’s serious economic development challenges and the pending state purchase of US Sugar’s lands,

-creating one of the nation’s most unique, and successful, mortgage foreclosure mediation programs and one which has been recognized favorably by the Florida Supreme Court, and

-hosting a major "summit” on criminal justice reform, which attracted three state agency heads and other national experts as speakers and which will create the momentum for policy change during Florida’s upcoming legislative session.

I hope you will read (and watch) the materials on this website, and let us know what you’re thinking.  Share your ideas, your knowledge and your research with others here to help build awareness and knowledge of important public policy issues.

Steve
